Vera Gartley

Canadian, born 1933

Edmonton-born artist Vera Gartley completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Calgary in 1972. She later earned a Ph.D. in Painting Practice and Methodology from the Union Institute of Cincinnati in 1987. Gartley taught at the Alberta College of Art and Design from 1964 until her retirement in 2011.

Gartley creates artworks from commercial signs and borrowed advertisement phrases, blurring the line between fine arts and advertising. Her work has been included in several University of Lethbridge Art Gallery exhibitions, including the 2010 show “Semiotica: The Persuasion of Text” and the 2015 show “Video Killed the Radio Star”.
