Disc Number: W2-398

John Allukpik was a skilled painter and sculptor from Kugluktuk, Nunavut. He was born on October 28, 1935 and passed away on April 4, 2015.

In a Summer 2014 Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art newsletter article titled “bringing the outside inside”, Laura Meghan Smith outlined a 2009 mural project at the Milukshuk Centre in Kugluktuk. The mural (which was the largest in Nunavut at the time of its creation) was a collaboration between John Allukpik, his wife Lena Allukpik, and Winnipeg artist Chantal Dupas. In the article, Dupas commented on working with John, stating that “His content always comes from his youth and as he painted he would reminisce and make up little stories between the characters, but it was never pre-planned...”

On April 13, 2015 Nunavut News/North published the article “Fond memories of artist” after John’s death. His daughter Irene Allukpik provided some biographical information in the article, including that “…he grew up on the land” and “It was while stricken with tuberculosis that Irene thinks her dad learned how to paint with oils.” Irene said the subject matter in his paintings was often “…winter scenes, with iglus and dog teams” and “in the summer, tents made out of caribou skin out on the beautiful land.” On his art career, the article stated that “…John said he learned how to paint in 1953. He stopped painting for 20 years, but picked it up again and remained an avid artist, creating about seven paintings each month. His work ranged in size from 16-inch by 20-inch paintings to 24-inch by 30-inch paintings.”

John Allukpik’s understanding of Inuit lifeways and ecological knowledge is conveyed through his artwork. His work can be found in the collections of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, and at the University of Alberta.
