Annora Brown
Canadian, 1899 - 1987
Annora Brown explored themes of Albertan identity through drawing and painting. She was known for depictions of natural landscapes, wildflowers, and First Nations communities in Canada. She studied at the Ontario College of Art before teaching at Mount Royal College (1929-1931), Banff School of Fine Arts (1945-1950), and the University of Alberta’s handicrafts program (1931). In 1971 the University of Lethbridge granted the long-time Fort Macleod resident an honorary doctorate.
Brown completed major projects in documenting 200 Alberta wildflowers for the Glenbow Museum, publishing the 1955 collection of illustrated legends Old Man’s Garden, and serving as the first female member of the Alberta Society of Artists. Her work resides in many public and private collections, reflecting the numerous national and provincial honours Brown received in her lifetime.
