Tony Hunt

Canadian, 1942 - 2017

The oldest son of Henry and Helen Hunt, Tony Hunt Sr. was a hereditary Kwakwaka’wakw chief, world-renowned artist, and champion of Indigenous knowledge. His other given names are Nakapenkem (Seven Times a Chief) and Mu-pen-kim Kla-kwa Dzee (Four Times Chief Big Copper). Hunt was famous for his KwaGulth style paintings, carvings, and totem poles reflecting the stories of his people.

Hunt served as assistant carver to his father Henry Hunt and maternal grandfather Mungo Martin at Thunderbird Park at the Royal British Columbia Museum through the 1960s. In 1970 he moved on to open the Arts of the Raven Gallery in Victoria, which focuses on the display and management of contemporary Indigenous art. Hunt received the Order of British Columbia, the Commonwealth Medal of Honor, and an honorary doctorate from Royal Roads University. Hunt designed and created more than one hundred totem poles that are housed around the world.
