Kingwatsiak Jaw

Kingwatsiak Jaw, also known as “King”, was born in Keatuk in 1962 and lived in Kinngait, Nunavut. He began to carve early in life at age eight, growing up with relatives who were also artists. Nanuit (polar bears) were a favoured subject in Jaw’s work, including the piece “Bear on iceberg” in the University of Lethbridge art collection. His sculpture was included in the Marion Scott Gallery’s “Major/Minor” 1996 exhibition in Vancouver. Public collections with works by Kingwatsiak Jaw include the University of Michigan Museum of Art, the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, and the University of Delaware museum collection. He passed away in 2012.
