Karen Brownlee

Karen Brownlee is a Lethbridge watercolour artist whose paintings illustrate the history of farming in Alberta, and her work is influenced by a family interest in oral storytelling. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Art from the University of Lethbridge in 1976 before moving to study art at various Canadian workshops. In 1987 she left a teaching position at Lethbridge College to become a full-time practicing artist. In 2007 Brownlee published “The Sakura Tree”, an illustrated juvenile novel nominated for the Alberta Children’s Book Award.
Brownlee has been featured in numerous Western Canadian group and solo shows, and her work is found in collections that focus on rural communities and Japanese culture. Her work was featured in the 2017 University of Lethbridge Art Gallery exhibition “Looking Back, Looking Forward” commemorating the university’s fiftieth anniversary. Brownlee has also been a long-time participant in the En Plein Air Exhibition organized by the University of Lethbridge and the Coutts Centre for Western Canadian Heritage.
