Paul Toolooktook

Canadian, 1947 - 2003

Baker Lake carver Paul Toolooktook was born in 1947 near Tipjalik, Nunavut. In the 1990s, Paul was involved with the Uyaraqtaqtiit artists’ association. His mother, Martha Aptanik, and step-brother, Basil Aptanik were also artists.

Toolooktook’s work often depicts northern animals and humans, spirits, stories, and transforming figures. He travelled to Osaka, Japan in 1970 to carve with several other Inuit artists in the Canadian Pavilion at Expo ’70. He has also attended Calgary Stampede, Klondike Days in Edmonton, and the PNE in Vancouver to demonstrate his carving.

His sculptures have been shown at exhibitions in the Marion Scott Gallery, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Inuit Gallery of Vancouver, Feheley Fine Arts, and many others.
