Rita McKeough
Canadian, born 1951
Rita McKeough is an artist, musician, and educator known for creating immersive installations and performances that rely on audio, mechanical, electronic, and digital components. She explores recurring themes of displacement, domestic abuse, and ecological damage. McKeough obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Calgary in 1975 and a Master of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1979. She currently teaches at the Alberta University of the Arts.
McKeough is the 2009 receipt of the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts for her contributions to contemporary Canadian art. She has participated in shows across Canada. One of her most recent installations was the 2020 installation “darkness is as deep as the darkness is” at the Walter Phillips Gallery in the Banff Centre. She also installed “The Lion’s Share” at the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery in 2011 as part of the gallery’s “Food Series” touring exhibition.
