Ruth Annaqtuusi Tulurialik

Canadian, 1934

Ruth Annaqtuusi Tulurialik is a renowned graphic artist, as well as singer and musician from Qamani’tuaq (Baker Lake), NU. Born in 1934 in the Kazan River area, Tulurialik was adopted by her aunt and uncle, Elisapee Unuqnuq and Thomas Tapatai, and the family settled in Qamani’tuaq. Tulurialik married Hugh Tulurialik, an outfitting business operator and had three children. Depicting scenes of traditional life on the land, Tulurialik’s drawings show her knowledge of Inuit stories and legends.
While Tulurialik originally began her artistic pursuits in wool duffel wall-hangings, she began drawing in the mid-1960s at the encouragement and guidance of fellow artist Jessie Oonark. By 1971, Tulurialik became a regular contributor to the Baker Lake print collection.

Tulurialik's work has been featured in exhibitions across Canada. In 1986, Tulurialik asked author David F. Pelly to help her make a book featuring her illustrations titled "Qikaluuktut: Images of Inuit Life," which uses words and drawings to describes Inuit culture and customs.
