Tivi Paningina

Canadian, 1917 - 1991

Tivi Paningina was a sculptor and graphic artist from Ivujivik, QC. He was born in 1917 in Kuuvik and married sculptor and artist Lizzie Aviliajuk Nauya. Paningina and his wife also influenced their children’s artistic pursuits: their daughters Mary Paningajak (also known as Mary Putuguk Luuku) and Elisapee Naluijuk sculpt and sew; and their son Charlie Paningajak is a sculptor as well. For a time, Paningina was the only artist producing prints in the small community of Ivujivik.
Paningina’s prints were featured in a number of the Arctic Quebec Print Collection catalogues and have been exhibited internationally. Most recently, his works have been featured in the 2020 ULAG exhibit Unikkausivut: Stories from the North.
