Thomassie Echaluk
Canadian, 1935 - 2011
Thomassie Echaluk was a graphic artist and sculptor from Inukjuak (Port Harrison), QC. Born in 1935 at a camp near Inukjuak, Echaluk’s father was sculptor Lucassie Echalook. Little is known about Echaluk’s early life, but at the age of 25, he began sculpting as a way of earning money. In 1963, Echaluk’s family moved to Inukjuak and he continued his artistic pursuits.
While he began as a sculptor, he also created drawings and learned printmaking. In the early 1970s, Echaluk participated in a print workshop in Puvirnituq with his nephew, sculptor and graphic artist Noah Echaluk. When they returned to Inukjuak, the pair worked to convert an abandoned portable classroom into the Inukjuak print studio, holding their own printmaking workshop for the community in 1972. Echaluk was the manager of the studio until it closed in 1976.
Echaluk’s works have been featured across Canada and internationally. Several of his prints have been included in the Arctic Quebec print collection. His works have not yet been shown at the ULAG.
