Augustin Anaittuq
Canadian, 1935 - 1992
Augustin Anaittuq was a graphic artist, sculptor, and printmaker from Kugaaruk (Pelly Bay), NU. Born at Qasigiaqsiurvik near Chesterfield Inlet, NU in 1935, little is known about Anaittuq’s early life. He married sculptor Sabina Qunqnirq Anaittuq and moved to Kugaaruk where he began his artistic pursuits.
Anaittuq worked in printmaking and drawing, although he was most well-known for his sculpture. Beginning in 1966, Anaittuq sculpted primarily in bone and ivory; throughout his career, he favoured walrus jaw bones. He occasionally used other materials, like fur, to create a mixed media composition.
Anaittuq’s works have been exhibited across Canada and in Europe. His works have not yet been featured at the ULAG.
