Madeleine Isserkrut Kringayark
1928-1984
Madeleine Isserkrut Kringayark was a sculptor from Naujaat (Repulse Bay), NU. Kringayark was born in 1928 on Southampton Island, NWT, to sculptor Apollina Nobvak. In 1942 she married fellow sculptor Nicholas Kringayark and the couple lived a traditional Inuit lifestyle before settling in Naujaat in the early 1950s. Among the first in her community to begin carving, Kringayark depicted hunting and domestic scenes with fine details.
Kringayark and her husband’s artistic influence undoubtedly impacted their daughters Martha Ulliyak Milortok and Simona Kringayark, both of whom became sculptors.
Alongside a work by fellow Naujaat sculptor Jean Mapsalak, one of Kringayark’s carvings was featured on the 17-cent stamp in 1979. Kringayark’s works have not yet been shown at the ULAG.
