Henry Hunt
Henry Hunt is a Kwakwaka’wakw carver and artist. He was the grandson of ethnographer George Hunt and father of celebrated carvers Tony, Richard, and Stanley. In 1954, Hunt moved from working as a fisherman and logger to serve as Mungo Martin’s assistant at the British Columbia Provincial Museum’s Thunderbird Park which had opened in 1941. He became master carver there in 1962 and retained the position until his retirement in 1974.
The work of Hunt and his family played key roles in promoting Kwakwaka’wakw culture through their preservation of carving techniques, motifs, and stories. Hunt’s totem poles are held in international collections.
