Simon Charlie

1920 - 2005

A member of the Cowichan Tribe (Quamichan) of the Coast Salish Nation, Simon Charlie was a master wood carver whose totem poles stand in locations around the world. He also had the name Hwunumetse’. He was renowned for his contributions to education and the presentation of his cultural heritage. Charlie combined his passions as he dedicated himself to passing knowledge down to younger generations. His style is characterized by the use of a tool called an adze, which Charlie used to create the textures of fur or feathers on animals.

Charlie’s art and masks are held in international collections. He was awarded the National Centennial Medal (1967), the Order of British Columbia (2001), and the Order of Canada (2003).
