Edward Bawden
British, 1903 - 1989
Edward Bawden (1903-1989, b. Braintree, England – d. Saffron Walden, England)
English painter, illustrator, and graphic artist Edward Bawden was known for his prints, book covers, posters, and metal furniture. He studied at the Cambridge School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London, the latter of which he would come to teach at. He married Charlotte Epton in 1932, a fellow student at the Royal College of Art, and the pair had two children who would go on to become artists. Son Richard Bawden’s work as an artist is often seen as indistinguishable in style and skill from his father’s works.
During World War II, Bawden served as a war artist focusing on Middle Eastern landscapes and portraits. In 1949 and 1950 he would travel to Canada to teach at the Banff School of Fine Art, an experience that his contemporaries would later note that Bawden greatly enjoyed. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (1946), Trustee of the Tate Gallery (1951), and received a number of other prestigious awards and honorary doctorates.
For the rest of his life Bawden would travel Europe, paint watercolour landscapes, and illustrate a number of publications. Cats were a frequent inclusion of his domestic scenes and illustrative work. His art has been featured in solo and group exhibitions, been the focus of numerous public works projects across the United Kingdom, and is collected in international collections.
