Martha Ittuluka'naaq

Canadian, 1912 - 1981

Martha Ittuluka’naaq was a graphic artist from Qamani’tuaq (Baker Lake), NU. Born in 1912 near the Kazan River, Ittuluka’naaq lived a traditional nomadic life before settling in Qamani’tuaq in the early 1960s to avoid starvation due to changing caribou migration. While little is known about her husband or family life, Ittuluka’naaq was a widow when she was relocated to Qamani’tuaq, and used her artistic abilities to earn an income. A number of Ittuluka’naaq’s drawings, done in pencil and crayon, were made into prints at the Sanavik (formerly Baker Lake) Co-operative.
