Annie Kilabuk Jr.
Annie Kilabuk was a graphic artist and talented seamstress from Pangnirtung (Pannirtuuq), NU. Born at Qimmisuuq camp in 1932 to her mother Natanine. Kilabuk lived a traditional life before becoming one of the first to settle in Pangnirtung in the late 1960s. Kilabuk married Josepee Kilabuk and together they raised six children. Kilabuk’s artistic pursuits began with embroidery done in the evenings after her work at a local hospital, and then moved into drawing and graphic art. Kilabuk also made toys, dolls, and duffle socks.
Kilabuk was very concerned with using her art to tell stories to future generations and ensuring that they were able to learn from her drawings, even after she was gone. Her husband had occasionally produced drawings, one of which becoming a print in 2005, and Kilabuk herself taught informal sewing classes at the local school. In 1999, Kilabuk completed a printmaking program offered in Pangnirtung through Nunavut Arctic College taught by master printmaker Judith Leidl and by 2000 became one of two women to participate as printmakers on a regular basis in the annual Pangnirtung collection.
The suffix “Jr.” was added by Kilabuk to be distinguished from her older sister-in-law, Annie Kilabuk Sr.
Kilabuk’s works have not yet been exhibited at the ULAG.
