Josiah Nooeelarlik

Canadian, 1928 - 2005

Josiah Nooeelarlik was a sculptor from Qamani’tuaq (Baker Lake), NU.

Eldest son of renowned artist Jessie Oonark, Josiah was a well-known sculptor. He often carved animal hybrids, human figures in transformation, spirits, and shamans. Many of his works are compositions of various figures and subjects, and he frequently added a distinctive pair of antlers to some of his carvings.

In addition to his mother, Nooeelarlik comes from a large family of artists, including siblings Victoria Mamnguqsualuq Kayuryuk (silkscreen and stencil), Janet Uqayuittuq Kigusiuq (wall hangings and sculpture), Nancy Pukirniq, Miriam Qiyuq (wall hangings and sculpture), Peggy Qablunaaq Aittauq (sculpture), Mary Yussipik, and William Noah (stencil and watercolour).

Nooeelarlik’s art has been a part of numerous exhibitions, including at the Winnipeg art Gallery, the Marion Scott Gallery and others. His work can be found in the collections of the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and the Canadian Museum of History among others.
