Canadian, 1914 - 1996
Irene McCaugherty was an artist, writer, and poet born in the Lethbridge suburb of Hardieville. As a folk artist, she illustrated memories of the settler pioneer life. She also typically used an extended rectangular format, 7.5 x 21.5 inches, meant to mimic the view through the windshield of a moving vehicle; her pickup truck that she drove around southern Alberta. Throughout her career, she wrote columns for various Southern Alberta newspapers.
McCaugherty received an Alberta Achievement Award in 1992 and an honorary doctorate from the University of Lethbridge in 1995. Her art has been collected and shown across Canada. Notable exhibitions of her work include the 2018 installation of Lethbridge College Founders’ Square and the 2015 Alberta Foundation for the Arts travelling exhibition “Rural Life”.
