Annemarie Schmid-Esler
Canadian, 1937 - 2013
Annemarie Schmid-Esler was a ceramics artist, instructor, and lecturer. She completed a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Manitoba in 1959. Schmid-Esler travelled in Europe for a year, which inspired her to become a social worker. In 1962 she turned to art instead and enrolled in the Winnipeg School of Art’s ceramics program. She completed a degree in ceramic sculpture at the Alberta College of Art in 1968.
Common interests in her work are Modernist theory, Post-Modernist theory, and American blues music. Her sculptures are recognizable for her use of various tools in their creation, from pencils and stencils to photo-transfer. Schmid-Esler’s work is exhibited and held in collections across Canada, the United States, and Europe. She was the recipient of several major grants and awards.
