Francoise Gilot
French, 1921 - 2023
Francoise Gilot's paintings are characterized by organic forms; her later paintings have more saturated colour relationships and structured compositions. Her practice also includes printmaking techniques such as monographs and aquatints.
Born in 1921 in Neilly-sur-Seine, France, Gilot continues to exhibit her work internationally and lives in New York City.
At the age of 21 she met Pablo Picasso, and the two had a ten-year relationship. In 1953, Gilot left Picasso, taking with her their two children, Claude and Paloma, and 11 years later, published the best-selling book “Life With Picasso” describing their family life and artistic collaborations. She later married artist Luc Simon, with whom she had a child, Aurélia. This marriage ended in divorce. Several years later she married American polio vaccine pioneer, Jonas Salk; their marriage lasted until his death in 1995.
