Janet Mitchell
Born in Medicine Hat, Janet Mitchell was a landscape painter known for her watercolour and oil paintings. While Mitchell was largely self taught, she did attend the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art, the Banff Centre, and Emma Lake Artist’s Workshops. Her watercolours are colourful and naïve depictions of the Alberta landscape and its residents.
Mitchell was a member of the Alberta Society of Artists and the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour. In the 1940s she was a member of the Calgary Group alongside Maxwell Bates, Jock MacDonald, Jim and Marion Nicoll, Luke and Vivian Lindoe, and others. Her work has been shown and collected across Canada. Mitchell’s work was included in the 2014 University of Lethbridge Art Gallery show “Night at the Gallery”.
