Mathew Aqigaaq (Akeeah) ᒪᑐ ᐊᑭᒐ
Disc Number: E2-350

Mathew Aqigaaq was born on August 14, 1940 near Harvaqtuuq (the Kazan River) in what is now Nunavut. He began sculpting in Qamani’tuaq (Baker Lake), Nunavut in the 1960s after spending time in a Manitoba sanitorium. Matthew used hard basalt stone for his carvings, for which Qamani’tuaq is known. His sculptures primarily feature people, frequently mothers and children, as well as musk oxen and other animals. A November 22, 2017 Walker’s Auction catalogue featuring Inuit & First Nations Art described Mathew’s work as having “…all the hallmarks of the classic Baker Lake style: monumentality, sensuous outlines and massive volumes.”

He had several solo exhibitions and has been a part of a long list of group shows including at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Edmonton Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Marion Scott Gallery, the Inuit Gallery of Vancouver, and the Canadian Museum of Civilization.

The public collections that contain artwork by Aqigaaq include, but are not limited to, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the National Gallery of Canada, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, and the Inuit Cultural Institute.

Mathew Aqigaaq passed away in 2010.
