Ballachey, Barbara

Canadian, born 1949

Barbara Ballachey is an Edmonton-born and Calgary raised artist. Her studies include time at Banff School of Fine Arts, McGill University, l’École des Beaux-arts de Montréal, and the University of Calgary where she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1971. Ballachey pulls inspiration for her landscapes and abstractions from what she sees in the world around her and how she chooses to see it. Representations of Alberta’s Foothills region are common subjects of her paintings.
Ballachey’s work is held in major collections across Canada and she has participated in solo and group exhibitions around the world. In 2011 her work was included in the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery’s exhibition, "A Little History on the Prairies." She has completed residencies in Botswana, Canada, France, Ireland, the United States, and Zambia. Most notable of these residencies is her many years of attendance at the Emma Lake Artists’ Workshops, putting her in contact with leading artists.
