George Arluk ᐊᓗ
Disc Number: E3-1049

Born in 1949 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, George Arluk began to carve when he was nine-years-old. He grew up in both Arviat and Kangiqliniq (Rankin Inlet), Nunavut and has also lived in Chesterfield Inlet and Baker Lake, Nunavut and Churchill, Manitoba. A Katilvik biography states that Arluk’s “…early works are influenced by the abstract style of Tiktak, Kavik, and John Pangnark who [he] encountered while he lived in Rankin Inlet from 1956 to 1975.”

George Arluk is known for minimalist carving exploring form and shape in his sculptures, and although he should be appreciated in his own right, his work has drawn “…comparison to the sculpture of Henry Moore”, as quoted in the Katilvik biography. Working with stone and antler, he often depicts human figures as well as animals and spirits emerging from the rock in his distinctive style noted for fluid curves and openings.

Arluk’s artwork has been widely exhibited, including at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Marion Scott Gallery, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the Remai Modern, the Inuit Gallery of Vancouver, the Art Gallery of Ontario and many more. His work can be found in the collections of the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, the Inuit Cultural Institute and others.

George Arluk now resides in Arviat, Nunavut.
