Aoudla Pudlat (Disc Number: E7-1366)
1951 - 2006
Born on July 23rd, 1951, Aoudla Pudlat was a sculptor, illustrator, and printmaker from Kinngait, Nunavut. In the 1970s, Aoudla apprenticed at Kinngait Studios producing both prints of his own and those of other artists. He applied various perspectives and utilized space in his work, with visual styles described as ranging from “photorealistic to fantastical” (Inuit Art Quarterly). “Bird of Baffin” in the University of Lethbridge Art Collection exemplifies this characteristic movement and depth, along with a contrasting and imaginative colour scheme. He often focused on birds in his artwork, and “Bird of Baffin” was in the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery’s exhibition called “The World Around Me” in 1988. Other works of Aoudla’s in exhibitions at the University include the drawing “Seal”, which was a part of “Works for the Drawing Bar” in 2016, and “Fish” was in 2017’s “ᐃᓄᐃᑦ”. Pudlat’s prints can also be found in numerous collections, catalogues, and have been shown in multiple shows and galleries. His first solo exhibition, Aoudla Pudlat: Drawings (1980-1981) was held in New York. In 1982, Nordair’s aircraft seat upholstery was fitted with Aoudla’s “Arctic Silhouettes” commissioned design. He moved to Qamani’tuaq, Nunavut in 1996 and passed away in 2006.
