Etidlooie Etidlooie

Canadian, 1911 - 1981

Etidlooie Etidlooie was a sculptor and graphic artist from Kinngait (Cape Dorset), NU. Etidlooie was born in 1911, and little is known about his life before his marriage to Kingmeata Etidlooie, although she was not his first wife, and he was her second husband. In the mid-1960s, Etidlooie and Kingmeata moved to Kinngait with their children, including Etidlooie’s son, Samuellie, and Mathewsie, the adopted son of Kingmeata’s deceased brother.
As talented artists, both Etidlooie and Kingmeata became members of the Kinngait Co-operative (formerly the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative). Etidlooie’s stone sculptures were inspired by the natural and spirit world. His drawings, which depicted scenes of living on the land before moving to settlements, were often very detailed and not easily translated into prints for the Kinngait print collection. Many of Etidlooie and Kingmeata’s children went on to become talented sculptors, printmakers, and graphic artists.
Etidlooie’s work has been featured in a number of exhibitions across Canada and internationally and many of his prints were included in the Cape Dorset annual print collection. His work has not yet been shown at the ULAG.
