Mona Ohoveluk
Mona Ohoveluk was a graphic artist from Ulukhaktok (Holman), NWT. She was born in 1935 at Rymer Point on the southwest side of Victoria Island, NU. Ohoveluk began drawing later in life and her work was translated into prints in the late 1960s until 1991. Ohoveluk had seven children and most of her drawing was done after her children were asleep. Ohoveluk’s drawings feature scenes of hunting and activities involving multiple figures. She enjoyed creating difficult compositions in her works.
Ohoveluk was an encouraging figure to her fellow artists, including Mary K. Okheena, who likened the local artistic community to a family. Ohoveluk’s brother Patrick Akovak Klengenberg was a sculptor and graphic artist, and her extended family also consisted of a number of artists, including sister-in-law Elsie Klengenberg, niece Helen Klengenberg, and nephew Stanley Elonak Klengenberg.
Most recently, Oshoveluk’s works were featured in the 2019 ULAG exhibition From the Collection and Recent Acquisitions: Highlights from the collection of Dr. Margaret (Marmie) Hess in 2018.
