Gerard William Brender à Brandis
Gerard William Brender á Brandis (1942- , b. Holland)
Born in Holland, Gerard William Brender á Brandis is an artist best known for the precision of his woodblock prints. His family immigrated to Canada in 1947 where an elementary school teacher introduced his class to the basics of bookbinding. After moving to Ontario, Brandis completed a B.A. in Fine Arts History with an emphasis on studio practice at McMaster University. He was introduced to wood engravings by a professor in 1964 and would devote his career to the practice through forming relationships with established engravers and honing an incredible attention to detail.
From 1991 to 2019, Brandis maintained an open studio in which the public could see him creating books and woodblock prints. He personally completes every step in the process of making his books—papermaking, engraving, typesetting, binding, and constructing the covers. He is a member of the Wood Engraver’s Network, producing works with such subjects as plants, landscapes, buildings, and musical instruments. Brandis’ work is found and exhibited in international collections.
